Quantifying contextual contributions to word-recognition processes.

چکیده
The experiment reported here used the gating paradigm (Grosjean, 1980) to investigate the following issues: To test the validity of the claims made by the "cohort" theory (MarslenWilaon & Tyler, 1980; Marslen-Wilson & Welsh, 1978) for the interaction of sensory and contextual constraints during the process of recognizing spoken words, and to determine the relative contribution of two kinds of contextual constraint-syntactic and interpretative-in reducing the amount of sensory input needed for recognition. The results both provide good support for the cohort model, and show that although strong syntactic constraints on form-clam only marginally reduce the amount of sensory input needed, a minimal interpretative context has a sub. stantial facilitatory effect on word recognition.

Recognizing a word in a meaningful text involves processes that combine information from many different sources, and poth bottom-up processes (such as feature extraction and letter recognition) and top-down processes (contextual information) are thought to interact when skilled readers recognize words. Two similar experiments investigated word recognition latencies of adult readers who read sin...
متن کاملOn the functional nature of the N400: Contrasting effects related to visual word recognition and contextual semantic integration.
Electrical scalp recordings revealed the brain's sensitivity to both lexical properties of words and their contextual fit with a previous sentence context around 400 ms after word presentation. The so-called N400 component has been suggested to reflect the cost either of target word recognition or of a postlexical process for integrating word meaning into a context. In a sentence comprehension ...
متن کاملMaking long-distance relationships work: Quantifying lexical competition with Hidden Markov Models
A listener recognizes a stimulus word from acoustic phonetic input by discriminating that word's representation from those of other words. The Neighborhood Activation Model (NAM) [28] is a long-standing and deeply in uential model quantifying how properties of the stimulus word and its competitors in uence recognition. The current project incorporates Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) into the NAM's ...
متن کاملSpoken Word Recognition of Code-Switched Words by Chinese-English Bilinguals
Two experiments with Chinese–English bilinguals were conducted to examine the recognition of code-switched words in speech. In Experiment 1, listeners were asked to identify a codeswitched word in a sentence on the basis of increasing fragments of the word. In Experiment 2, listeners repeated the code-switched word following a predesignated point upon hearing the sentence. Converging evidence f...
متن کاملDevelopmental differences in the impact of contextual factors on susceptibility to retroactive interference.
The influence of contextual similarity on children's recognition memory performance was examined using a retroactive interference paradigm. In the study, 9- and 12-year-olds were randomly assigned to one of two contextual conditions. In both conditions, target and interfering information were presented in distinctive contexts by using different modalities (pictures and words, respectively). How...
